Job Summary:

The Design and Development Engineer at AmSafe Bridport will undertake new and existing product development / engineering projects, evaluate existing data and design products to fulfill customer requirements. Innovate and develop new commercial and defense products related cargo restraint systems and other new applications.  Produce engineering drawings, test plans, reports, manufacturing instructions and control of their configuration in accordance with standard aerospace engineering practices in an AS9100 system using ERP/CAD systems.  Provide product and manufacturing support when needed.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Undertake design work in accordance with the AmSafe Bridport Engineering practice – including; customer liaison, analysis, CAD drawings, and documentation.
  • Evaluate product design via hand analysis or FEA (HyperWorks and Pam-Crash).
  • Host and facilitate regular reviews of engineering projects.
  • Coordinate and take part in the manufacture of prototypes parts and production trials.
  • Build a working knowledge of the FAA PMA/TSO regulations and other applicable FAA CFR’s in pursuit of additional product approvals.

Desirable Attributes:

  • Prior design experience of textile or sewn products.
  • Prior experience with U.S. Defense projects and their requirements
  • Preparing cost estimates for non-recurring and recurring project elements.
  • Project Management experience.
  • Experience with MRP/ERP systems relating to; bills of material, engineering data.
  • Thorough understanding and acceptance of business and personal ethics associated with the engineering function.
  • Seeks continuous improvement and change; suggests and encourages innovative ideas for products/processes.
  • Has the ability to view problems from a total business perspective, considering economic opportunity, required investment, risks and anticipated paybacks.
  • Seeks data from several sources to make informed decisions.
  • Prior work experience with U.S. Government flow-down requirements.
  • Previous lead or supervisory experience within an aerospace engineering design organization.

Qualifications:

  • Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering Degree and a minimum of 5 years relevant experience related to aerospace.
  • Catia or SolidWorks drafting experience.
  • Basic knowledge and experience developing and using aerospace engineering design and control processes.
  • Ability to produce written reports, technical documents, specifications, test plans, etc.
  • Ability to utilize and manage engineering control elements of an ERP system.
  • Excellent verbal and presentation communication skills are required.
  • Experience with FAA certification packages (STC, TSO, PMA) a plus. 

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university
  • Three to five years related experience and/or training
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, and customers.

Math Ability:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Computer Skills: 

Working knowledge of MS Word and Excel; Preferred expertise in utilizing MS Project; General understanding of enterprise software (ERP/MRP systems).
